The Albertina is famous museum in the Innere Stadt (First District) of Vienna.  It contains the one of the largest and the most reputed print rooms of the world. It has about approximately 65,000 drawings and near about 1 million old master prints. It also has many more and well suggested modern graphic works, photographs and some architectural drawings as well. Other than the graphics collection the museum do recently have got two noticeable collections of Impressionist and early 20th century art, of what some are on the permanent exhibitions in the museum. The museum also places some temporary exhibitions in the museum as well.

Museum Vienna’s Albertina is standing on one of the last remaining parts of the fortifications of Vienna, the Augustian Bastion. Originally, the Hofbauamt was constructed there at about the second half of the 17th century, in that location. In 1745, it was again reconstructed by the director of the Hofbauamt, Emanuel Teles Count Silva-Tarouca as to transform it into his palace. That’s why it is known as Palais Taroucca. The building later on adapted by the Duke Albert of Saxen-Teschen. He made it as his home and later on brought his collections of graphics from Brussels, there he worked as the governor of the Habsburg Netherlands. For the purpose, made the building as extended by Louis Montoyer. After that, the palace immediately bordered the Hofburg. The collection was expanded by Albert’s successors.

The collection was developed by the Duke Albert with the Genoese count Giacomo Durazzo as he was the Austrian ambassador in Venice. In 1776, the count presented about 1,000 pieces of art to Duke Albert and his wife Maria Christina.  In the 1820s Archduke Charles, the foster son of Duke Albert and Maria Christina, made more changes into the building made by Joseph Kornhäusel, that made an impression even over the interior design and decoration.  At the start of the year 1919, the building as well as collections passed from the Habsburgs to the ownership of the Republic of Austria. In 1920, the collection of prints and drawings was even modified with the collection of the former imperial court library. The name Albertina was then in 1921 was given to the structure. In March 1945, the Albertina was heavily damaged by bomb attacks during World War II. Albertina was entirely renovated and modernized from years 1998 to 2003, however graphics collections were put on to display only after year 2008.
