Vienna, the capital and the largest city of Austria also happens to be its cultural, economic, and political centre. There are various heritage buildings to be seen in this vibrant city and one of them is the St. Stephen’s Cathedral which is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Vienna and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, OP. The church displays Romanesque and Gothic style and stands on the ruins of two earlier churches, the first being a parish church consecrated in 1147. The cathedral holds pride in hosting many important events in that nation’s history and it is in fact one of the city’s most recognizable symbols.

This 107 mertes long, 40 metres wide and 136 metres tall massive church was dedicated to St. Stephen. The building is made of limestone but soot and other forms of air pollution accumulating on the church have given it a black color. However, recent restoration projects have again returned the building to its original white.

The Cathedral’s massive south tower is its highest point and a dominant feature of the Vienna skyline. At the tip of the tower stands the double-eagle imperial emblem with the Habsburg-Lorraine coat of arms on its chest, surmounted by a double-armed apostolic cross. The north tower stands at 68 meters tall (223 ft), roughly half the height of the south tower.

The main entrance to the church is named the Giant’s Door. The tympanum above the Giant’s Door depicts Christ Pantocrator flanked by two winged angels. On the left and right are the two Roman Towers. The Roman Towers, together with the Giant’s Door, are the oldest parts of the church.

The cathedral stands high in glory with its ornately patterned, richly coloured roof, 111 meters (361 ft) long, and covered by 230,000 glazed tiles. The roof is so steep that it is sufficiently cleaned by the rain alone and is seldom covered by snow. St. Stephen’s Cathedral has 23 bells in total.

There are 18 altars in the main part of the church, and more in the various chapels. There are several formal chapels in St. Stephen’s Cathedral including St. Katherine’s Chapel, St. Barbara’s Chapel, St. Eligius’s Chapel, St. Valentine’s Chapel and many more.

One of the top tourist attractions in Vienna is the Albertina museum which is home to one of the largest and most important print rooms in the world with approximately 65,000 drawings and approximately 1 million old master prints, as well as more modern graphic works, photographs and architectural drawings. The museum holds permanent exhibitions on two significant collections of Impressionist and early 20th century art, as well as frequent temporary exhibitions too.

The original building was taken over by Duke Albert of Saxen-Teschen who used it as his residence and later brought his graphics collection there from Brussels. The collection was expanded by Albert’s successors. In 1776, the Austrian ambassador of Venice presented nearly 1,000 pieces of art to Duke Albert and his wife Maria Christina.

Since 1805 it has been founded in one of the most magnificent neoclassical palaces in Europe: the Palais Albertina. The Batliners then set up the Herbert and Rita Batliner Art Foundation, which transferred the artworks to the Albertina as a permanent loan. The museum houses works from the Swiss collection of Eva and Mathias Forberg, around 100 works from the Batliner Collection, outstanding works by Paul Klee from the Carl Djerassi Collection, paintings by Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, Miró, Klee, Kandinsky, Chagall, and other masters along with late works by Picasso and exhibits by Rothko and Bacon and works by contemporary artists such as Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter.

Although the Albertina is a state museum, it is particularly fortunate because it gets a larger proportion of its budget from the private sector than other museums in Austria. When in Vienna, the museum is a must see by all the art lovers.

Schönbrunn Palace is a massive 1,400-room Rococo summer residence in Vienna, Austria that was used by the Royal family of Vienna for their Residency. It is one of the prominent cultural monuments in the Austria and has been proved itself to the prominent tourist center in Vienna after the years of 1960. All surroundings, walls and articles as in the Schonbrunn Palace tell upon and about the tastes, interests, and aspirations of successive Habsburg monarchs.

It was in the year 1569; Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II procured a large tract of the land on the floodplain of the Wien River below wowloeeneath a hill, having the position as between the Meidling and Hietzing, where an earlier owner, in 1548, had formed an illustrative mansion named as Katterburg. The emperor therefore ordered the entire area to be fenced and keep there games as like the pheasants, ducks, deer and boar, in order to perform and provide as set it as the court’s recreational hunting ground. In a small separate part of the area, “exotic” birds like turkeys and peafowl were ckept. Fishponds were even too constructed there. For around a century and so the area there was used as a hunting and recreational ground. The spot was much favorite of Eleonore Gonzaga who there lived hunting, and rather elaborated much time there and was bequeathed the area as her widow’s residence after the death of her husband. It was during 1538 to 1643 she added a palace to the Katterburg mansion, there in 1642 there is the first mention of the name as “Schönbrunn” on an invoice. The origins of the Schönbrunn orangery there go back into the past to Eleonore Gonzaga as well.

There is a much noted and recognized sculpted place as between the palace and the Sun Fountain that is recognized as the Great Parterre. The French garden is a big part of the area that was planned by Jean Trehet in 1695. It contains, among other things, a maze as well. There are many other attractive spots as well activities as found in the Palace complex including the world’s oldest existing zoo, an organgerie made about around in 1755, staple luxuries of European palaces of its type, a palm house too is well recognized over there. The garden axis points is on the side of about 60 meters higher hill, that since the 1775 has positioned the Gloriette structure. Another noticeable structure at the Schonbrunn is Roman Ruin that is also known as the Ruin of Carthage, the Roman Ruin is a set of follies made by the noted architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg and there he made an entirely new architectural feature in 1778.

The Viennese café is the tradition of the café that has developed into the typical institution of Vienna that plays an integral and major role into the Viennese culture and tradition. In some aspect the café culture in Vienna is by any means is not different from as found in the other parts of the world. This plays important role in Viennese culture and tradition. Here at Viennese café, the customer too ponders for long hours sitting alone and reads the newspaper. In company of coffee, the waiter too brings and gives an glass of cold tap water around the long stay will often bring additional water unrequested, with the notion to you that you are a guest out there and feel yourself to be comfortable and ease out there. The atmosphere of the Viennese Cafes was too extraordinary there was as around the 19th and early 20th century and preferred by the writers of that era who regularly use to meet out, exchange thoughts and to even write out there.

Literature as written out there at cafes is commonly known as to be the coffee house literature, and the writers there were known as to be the coffee house poets. The famous journal Die Fackel by Karl Kraus there is referred as to be the writer in cafes to a lager extent and prestige. The popular coffee house there is known as to be as including as Arthur Schnitzler, Alfred Polgar, Friedrich Torberg, and Egon Erwin Kisch. Famous writer and poet Peter Altenberg, too has provided this mail transferred to his well known café that is the favorite café, the Café Central. The furnishings of a Viennese café can change from plush and comfy to coldly modern and stylish. The classic look there involves like as the Apfelstrudel and Linzer torte. In many a classic cafes out there in the city the piano music is being played out at every evening and the social and cultural events are being organized there. In warmer months, customers are seen sitting outside in the evening and participate in social events like reading. The some popular cafes of that sort follows as Café Diglas, Café Central, Café Prückel and others.

For the historical background of the coffee house it is popular that the Polish-Habsburg army, while liberating Vienna from the second Turkish siege in 1683, found a number of sacks with strange beans that they thought to be the camel feed and wanted to burn it out. The Polish king Jan III Sobieski provided those sacks to one of his officers named Jerzy Franciszek Kulczycki, who started the tradition of coffee house by making the staartign coffee, later on it added some sugar and milk into it and thus the Viennese coffee tradition started. His contribution is even recognized to the date as his picture can be seen hanging out at many of the Viennese café houses.

The Freyung is a typical triangular public square in Vienna; it is situated at the first district, or Innere Stadt. The actual location of the square is outside the Roman fortification walls of Vindabona. About in the 12th century, Irish monks there reached as through the invitation of the Duke Henry II of Austria to create a monastery. The monastery is named as Schottenkloster that means the Scottish Monastery, as Ireland was referred to be the New Scotland at that time. The square around Schottenkloster was learnt as to be “bei den Schotten” (“at the Scots”). The name Freyung there has roots in the old German word “frey”, that means free as well. As the monastery was free of the control from the ducal authority as well has the power to provide the protection to the fugitives, the square learnt its name from its closeness to the Schottenkloster. The priory there was further provided to the monastery in 1773 and thus became popular as Schubladkastenhaus (Shoebox-house) due to its particular shape.

With the passage of the time The Freyung soon was converted into an important market square where various street artists and entertainer exhibits there art for living as well as survival. One such memorable performance at the square was of the Wiener Hanswurst (Viennese Fool) by Josef Stranitzky. Due to the closeness to the Hofburg Imperial Palace around in the 17th and 18th centuries many aristocrats formed their residencies at the square as well as close to the neighbouring Herrengasse. In 1856, under the renovation and modification spree the houses between the Freyung and the adjacent square Am Hof were destructed in order to widen the street between them. In the late 19th century banks and other named financial institutions and banks too moved there and made the headquarters there. During the time when the new financial institutions were coming to the square and more and more structures were standing there at the spot and the square was gaining the much deserved reputation, the Austria-Brunnen fountain, erected there in 1844-1846 by Ludwig Schwanthaler in respect of the Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria. The fountain is located at the exact middle of the square.

More close to the square is the famous Kunstforum exhibition hall that is place for the exhibition hall for modern and the contemporary art shows. It also houses the Austrian Bank of Trade and Commerce. The other places of the attraction at the square are The Freyung that is a Christmas market organized their every winter since the 1772. The modern pavements at the square too include the part of the 13th century old medieval pavement. Anyhow whatever the description might be given here the Freyung is undoubtedly is inevitable part and section of Vienna.

The Vienna Donauturm that came into the existence at operational level in April 1964 is the tallest free standing structure in Austria at the height of about 252 meters. It is also counted among the 65 tallest structure and towers in the world. The tower is situated close to the north bank of the Danube River at the district of Donaustadt, Vienna. The Donauturm was made at the time of 1962–1964, by the architect Hannes Lintl, in order to develop background for the Viennese International Horticultural Show 1964. The total height of the tower is about 252 metres (827 ft) in height. After the construction activity of about 18 months under the guidance of Eberhard Födisch, the tower was officially opened on 16 April 1964 by Federal President Adolf Schärf. And after that it became an important part of the Viennese skyline and has developed as a lookout point and tourist attraction.

It is located at the middle of the Donaupark that was there made to host the horticultural fair in Vienna’s 22nd District, Donaustadt, close to the bank of the Danube. There two high-speed elevators take passengers to the tower’s height to see platform at about 150 meters. There each lift carries about 14 passengers in about 35 seconds to reach at the top. During powerful wind the elevators travel at only half speed due to the objective fluctuation of the tower, there the movement of the elevator cable even to be much risky. The stairs there can be reached about and are approached as during the annual Donauturm run, or in period of an emergency. There are about two revolving restaurants at the tower at respective height of about 160 and 170 meters and presents the very panoramic view over the Austrian capital and the Danube River below it There, towers take about 26, 39 or 52 minutes to complete a full revolution. The observation deck of the tower has a bungee jumping site; there a platform projecting from the area at is used for the jumping purposes in the summer months. In was very unfortunate incident about on sixth June, 1968 four hot air balloons were launched from a meadow at Donauturm as three of them floated past the tower, the fourth was driven against the tower as was hung on the security grills at about approx height of approximately 150 meter. The balloon disintegrated and the gondola fell to the ground and in this unfortunate incident about two American balloonist Francis Shields and two Austrian passengers were killed.
