Freyung square a popular spot in Vienna

Posted by admin in General, Guide, Tips, Vienna Landmarks, Vienna Tour | Leave a comment

The Freyung is a typical triangular public square in Vienna; it is situated at the first district, or Innere Stadt. The actual location of the square is outside the Roman fortification walls of Vindabona. About in the 12th century, Irish monks there reached as through the invitation of the Duke Henry II of Austria to create a monastery. The monastery is named as Schottenkloster that means the Scottish Monastery, as Ireland was referred to be the New Scotland at that time. The square around Schottenkloster was learnt as to be “bei den Schotten” (“at the Scots”). The name Freyung there has roots in the old German word “frey”, that means free as well. As the monastery was free of the control from the ducal authority as well has the power to provide the protection to the fugitives, the square learnt its name from its closeness to the Schottenkloster. The priory there was further provided to the monastery in 1773 and thus became popular as Schubladkastenhaus (Shoebox-house) due to its particular shape.

With the passage of the time The Freyung soon was converted into an important market square where various street artists and entertainer exhibits there art for living as well as survival. One such memorable performance at the square was of the Wiener Hanswurst (Viennese Fool) by Josef Stranitzky. Due to the closeness to the Hofburg Imperial Palace around in the 17th and 18th centuries many aristocrats formed their residencies at the square as well as close to the neighbouring Herrengasse. In 1856, under the renovation and modification spree the houses between the Freyung and the adjacent square Am Hof were destructed in order to widen the street between them. In the late 19th century banks and other named financial institutions and banks too moved there and made the headquarters there. During the time when the new financial institutions were coming to the square and more and more structures were standing there at the spot and the square was gaining the much deserved reputation, the Austria-Brunnen fountain, erected there in 1844-1846 by Ludwig Schwanthaler in respect of the Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria. The fountain is located at the exact middle of the square.

More close to the square is the famous Kunstforum exhibition hall that is place for the exhibition hall for modern and the contemporary art shows. It also houses the Austrian Bank of Trade and Commerce. The other places of the attraction at the square are The Freyung that is a Christmas market organized their every winter since the 1772. The modern pavements at the square too include the part of the 13th century old medieval pavement. Anyhow whatever the description might be given here the Freyung is undoubtedly is inevitable part and section of Vienna.
