Posted by admin in General, Guide, Tips, Vienna Landmarks, Vienna Tour | Leave a comment

The Vienna Donauturm that came into the existence at operational level in April 1964 is the tallest free standing structure in Austria at the height of about 252 meters. It is also counted among the 65 tallest structure and towers in the world. The tower is situated close to the north bank of the Danube River at the district of Donaustadt, Vienna.  The Donauturm was made at the time of 1962–1964, by the architect Hannes Lintl, in order to develop background for the Viennese International Horticultural Show 1964. The total height of the tower is about 252 metres (827 ft) in height. After the construction activity of about 18 months under the guidance of Eberhard Födisch, the tower was officially opened on 16 April 1964 by Federal President Adolf Schärf. And after that it became an important part of the Viennese skyline and has developed as a lookout point and tourist attraction.

It is located at the middle of the Donaupark that was there made to host the horticultural fair in Vienna’s 22nd District, Donaustadt, close to the bank of the Danube. There two high-speed elevators take passengers to the tower’s height to see platform at about 150 meters. There each lift carries about 14 passengers in about 35 seconds to reach at the top. During powerful wind the elevators travel at only half speed due to the objective fluctuation of the tower, there the movement of the elevator cable even to be much risky.   The stairs there can be reached about and are approached as during the annual Donauturm run, or in period of an emergency. There are about two revolving restaurants at the tower at respective height of about 160 and 170 meters and presents the very panoramic view over the Austrian capital and the Danube River below it  There, towers take about   26, 39 or 52 minutes to complete a full revolution. The observation deck of the tower has a bungee jumping site; there a platform projecting from the area at is used for the jumping purposes in the summer months. In was very unfortunate incident about on sixth June, 1968 four hot air balloons were launched from a meadow at Donauturm as three of them floated past the tower, the  fourth was driven against the tower as was hung on the security grills at about approx height of approximately 150 meter.  The balloon disintegrated and the gondola fell to the ground and in this unfortunate incident about two    American balloonist Francis Shields and two Austrian passengers were killed.

Museum Vienna’s Albertina is standing on one of the last remaining parts of the fortifications of Vienna, the Augustian Bastion. Originally, the Hofbauamt was constructed there at about the second half of the 17th century, in that location. In 1745, it was again reconstructed by the director of the Hofbauamt, Emanuel Teles Count Silva-Tarouca as to transform it into his palace. That’s why it is known as Palais Taroucca. The building later on adapted by the Duke Albert of Saxen-Teschen. He made it as his home and later on brought his collections of graphics from Brussels, there he worked as the governor of the Habsburg Netherlands. For the purpose, made the building as extended by Louis Montoyer. After that, the palace immediately bordered the Hofburg. The collection was expanded by Albert’s successors.

The collection was developed by the Duke Albert with the Genoese count Giacomo Durazzo as he was the Austrian ambassador in Venice. In 1776, the count presented about 1,000 pieces of art to Duke Albert and his wife Maria Christina.  In the 1820s Archduke Charles, the foster son of Duke Albert and Maria Christina, made more changes into the building made by Joseph Kornhäusel, that made an impression even over the interior design and decoration.  At the start of the year 1919, the building as well as collections passed from the Habsburgs to the ownership of the Republic of Austria. In 1920, the collection of prints and drawings was even modified with the collection of the former imperial court library. The name Albertina was then in 1921 was given to the structure. In March 1945, the Albertina was heavily damaged by bomb attacks during World War II. Albertina was entirely renovated and modernized from years 1998 to 2003, however graphics collections were put on to display only after year 2008.
