Donauinsel: a 21-kilometre city beach in the middle of Vienna

Where you swim, cycle, run into festivals. The Donauinsel as Vienna's recreation phenomenon.

The Donauinsel is Vienna’s own thing: 21.1 km long, 70-210 metres wide, artificially built between 1972 and 1988 as flood protection. Today it’s a swimming, running, grilling and festival ground for the Viennese.

Swimming

Free and open access. Official bathing spots have lawns, snack stands, toilets, some nudist. Water quality is monitored and has been stable-good for years. Highlights: Strandbar Herrmann (at the Danube Canal entrance), Toter Grund (middle section, quieter), Copa Cagrana (southern entrance, with restaurants).

Cycling

Asphalt cycle path along the full length, both sides. Plus inline skate course. Rental stations at several Wiener Linien stations. The whole island and back: about 45 km. Half a day is more realistic: one half plus a cross-Danube subway hop back.

Events

Donauinselfest the last weekend of June: Europe’s largest open-air festival, three days, free. 2.5-3 million people across the three days. If you want quiet, don’t come then.

Swimming competitions, beach volleyball tournaments, pop-up concerts all year. Schedule on the City of Vienna site.

Getting there

Subway stops directly on the island: Donauinsel (U1), Neue Donau (U6). From Stephansplatz on the U1 about 12 minutes. From the 1st district: take the U2 to Donaumarina, short walk.

With kids

Playgrounds along the island, shallow entries on the Neue Donau side. Toilets at regular intervals. In summer there’s lifeguard service at the big beaches, but not the full length.

What to bring

  • Water and drinks (not every stretch has a stand).
  • Your own towel and sandals.
  • Sunscreen: little shade.
  • In summer a few rubbish bags, the official bins are often full.

If you want city-close plus water: Strandbar Herrmann on the Danube Canal (not the Donauinsel, but closer to the centre) is the shortest hop from the 1st district: 15 minutes on foot.
