One day is never enough, but stopover travellers exist. This route is compact, walkable and tram-friendly, and gives you a Vienna taste without rushing.

Long version (8 am to 10 pm)

08:00 — Breakfast at Café Sperl (Gumpendorfer Straße 11). Quiet before nine. A Melange, ham and eggs or buchteln. Plan: 45 minutes.

09:00 — Naschmarkt detour. Ten minutes across, olive stand, bakeries, cheese. If you’re hungry, breakfast right at the market.

10:00 — Walk to Stephansplatz. Past Otto Wagner’s Karlsplatz pavilions, through Operngasse, past the State Opera, up Kärntner Straße. 15 minutes walking.

10:15 — St. Stephen’s Cathedral inside, south tower optional (343 steps, 30 minutes).

11:30 — Hofburg and Heldenplatz. If you want imperial Vienna, take the Sisi-Hofburg-Schönbrunn combo ticket (valid 365 days). One hour.

13:00 — Lunch. Plachutta Wollzeile for tafelspitz, Figlmüller Bäckerstraße for schnitzel. Reserve a table in advance.

14:30 — Albertina or Upper Belvedere. Albertina is closer (at Augustinerplatz), Belvedere needs a tram. Both about two hours.

16:30 — Coffee and cake. Café Central, Demel or Hotel Sacher for Sachertorte. 45 minutes.

18:00 — MuseumsQuartier courtyard to sit, beer or spritzer.

19:30 — Dinner. Spittelberg lanes (7th district) for a beisl, or Skopik & Lohn (2nd district) for modern Viennese.

21:30 — Bar. Loos American Bar (Adolf Loos, 1908) for the classic, or Dachboden at the 25hours hotel for a view.

Short version (10 am to 5 pm)

Skip breakfast and bar. Do: Naschmarkt, Stephansdom, quick lunch (try Trzesniewski sandwiches), Albertina, Sachertorte. Spend the rest of the day walking without a plan.

If you have a connecting train or flight

The CAT (City Airport Train) takes 16 minutes from Wien Mitte to the airport, every 30 minutes. ÖBB Railjet to Salzburg, Munich, Budapest or Prague leaves from the main station. Allow 60 minutes of buffer, Vienna’s transit is reliable but better safe.

Sleeping between two trains? Try Hotel Schani at the main station or Andaz opposite.
