About this sight

The Prater is a large recreation and leisure area in the 2nd district. The Wurstelprater, the actual amusement park, has been open to the public since the 18th century. Its landmark is the Wiener Riesenrad, built in 1897 to mark the 50th jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph I; the steel-lattice wheel reaches 64.75 metres. Beyond the Wurstelprater, the roughly 4.4-kilometre Hauptallee is lined with chestnut trees and used by runners, cyclists and walkers.

Visiting

Park free year-round. Wurstelprater rides operate seasonally, most from March to October; the Ferris wheel runs all year.

Location: 2nd district (Leopoldstadt). Between the Danube and Danube Canal. Prater, Karmelitermarkt, Augarten - Vienna's most colourful district.
