About this sight

The Spanish Riding School in Vienna preserves the classical art of haute école dressage with Lipizzaner stallions. Its origins go back to the 16th century, with a riding school at the imperial court documented from 1572. The current Winter Riding School in the Hofburg was completed in 1735 by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach. In 2010 the school's classical riding tradition was added to Austria's UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. Visitors can book gala performances, morning training sessions and guided tours of the stables and riding hall.

Gala performances feature full choreographies with music. Morning training is cheaper and shows daily exercises.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, especially for gala performances, often sold out weeks ahead.

Are there breaks in the schedule?

In summer the Lipizzaners move to Heldenberg, so events in Vienna are limited then.

How do I get there?

Metro Herrengasse (U3) or Stephansplatz (U1, U3), a short walk to the Hofburg.
