Hundertwasserhaus

Colourful, organic architectural icon by Friedensreich Hundertwasser - inhabited gesamtkunstwerk.

About this sight

The Hundertwasserhaus at the corner of Kegelgasse and Löwengasse in the 3rd district was built between 1983 and 1985 as a municipal housing project. Friedensreich Hundertwasser provided the artistic concept, with Josef Krawina and later Peter Pelikan handling the architectural execution. Hallmarks are the irregular façade colours, the „dancing" windows, uneven floors inside the flats, and trees integrated into and onto the building. There are 52 apartments and four shops. The building itself is privately occupied and cannot be entered.

Visiting

Exterior visible all day, freely accessible. No interior visits; the Hundertwasser Village opposite is open instead.

Location: 3rd district (Landstraße). Belvedere, Hundertwasserhaus, embassies. Quiet, elegant, perfect for art lovers.
