About this sight
The Danube Island is an artificial, roughly 21-kilometre-long strip averaging 200 to 250 metres wide, sitting between the Danube and the parallel New Danube flood relief channel. It was created between 1972 and 1988 as a central part of Vienna's flood protection. Today the island is Vienna's largest continuous leisure area, with bathing meadows, cycle paths, sports facilities, a nudist zone and restaurants. Every summer it hosts the Donauinselfest, a free-admission open-air music festival.
