Hotel Stefanie

Vienna's oldest hotel - documented since 1600, on Taborstraße near the Danube Canal and the center.

Our verdict

Hotel Stefanie represents a calculation that rarely works out in Vienna: a classic four-star, 15 minutes on foot from the old town, at a rate the Ring does not offer - and on top of that the city's oldest hotel, documented as an inn since 1600. Leopoldstadt makes it possible, the district beyond the Danube Canal that many visitors overlook. If you value traditional hotel-keeping with a good breakfast and need no design statement, you get a lot of substance for the money here.

About the hotel

Hotel Stefanie is Vienna's oldest hotel - documented since 1600 on this spot, today part of the Viennese Schick Hotels. Classic four-star on Taborstraße in Leopoldstadt, traditionally run. Cross the Danube Canal and you reach Schwedenplatz and the center in a few minutes. Mostly classical clientele, quiet atmosphere, solid amenities. Breakfast has a good reputation.

Location: 2nd district (Leopoldstadt). Between the Danube and Danube Canal. Prater, Karmelitermarkt, Augarten - Vienna's most colorful district.

Who is it for?

A classic four-star for guests who like things calm and traditional: families appreciate the family rooms and the short walk to the Prater, while older visitors enjoy the dignified atmosphere and a breakfast with a solid reputation. If you arrive by car, the hotel garage (for a fee) is a real plus. The rate is fair for a four-star within walking distance of the center. It's not the right pick if you're after design hotels, rooftop bars and a buzzing scene - for that, Neubau or Mariahilf are better addresses.

What works

  • + The old town is about a 15-minute walk across the Danube Canal
  • + Breakfast with a strong reputation - included in most rates
  • + The hotel has its own garage - a real advantage for drivers in Vienna
  • + Family rooms in several layouts, with the Prater and Augarten close by
  • + The Danube Canal bike path and walking routes right outside the door

What to weigh up

  • A classic, conservative ambience - the wrong place if you seek design and scene
  • The Danube Canal gets lively on summer evenings - audible depending on room position
  • The garage costs extra and spaces are limited

Location & getting there

Hotel Stefanie is on Taborstraße in Leopoldstadt, Vienna's 2nd district - just a few minutes' walk from Schwedenplatz and the Danube Canal. The old town is about a 15-minute walk across the canal, remarkably central for this price bracket. It also comes with a genuine claim to fame: the Stefanie is Vienna's oldest hotel, documented as an inn continuously since 1600. Leopoldstadt has its own highlights too: the Prater, Karmelitermarkt and the Augarten, all things many visitors miss. The district is well served by metro and tram, and from the airport the CAT or S7 train brings you to Wien Mitte, just a short hop across the canal from the hotel.

Getting around from here

Schwedenplatz (U1/U4) approx. 10 min on foot

How the price compares

You are paying for classic four-star hotel-keeping with a good breakfast and an in-house garage, not for design or a first-district address. The district makes the difference: Leopoldstadt is close enough to walk into the center without paying the center premium. If you insist on sleeping inside the Ring, it will cost you noticeably more.

Currently from €209 per night, which places it in the priciest third of our Vienna selection (rank 17 of 25 by lowest rate). In the 2nd district, the median entry rate across our picks is €209.

Know before you book

  • Reserve a garage space in advance if arriving by car
  • Request a quiet room away from the canal side if you are noise-sensitive in summer
  • Ask the hotel directly about family room layouts - they differ a lot
  • Pick a rate with breakfast - it is one of the house strengths

Highlights

  • Right on the Donaukanal (Danube Canal)
  • Bike paths and riverside walks outside the door
  • 15 minutes on foot into the old town
  • Solid breakfast with a good reputation
  • Family rooms available
