About this sight

St. Stephen's Cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Vienna and stands on Stephansplatz in the 1st district. Parts of the structure go back to the 12th century, with the dominant Gothic rebuild starting in the 14th century. The 136-metre south tower, known locally as the „Steffl", can be climbed via 343 steps. The tiled roof, with around 230,000 glazed tiles forming the double-headed eagle, is one of its most recognisable features. Inside, the pulpit by Anton Pilgram and the catacombs are notable.
