Opened in 1872 as a Ringstraße palais, renovated several times, classic and understated. Mostly business travellers and academic tourism thanks to the university opposite. Location is the strong suit: U2 Schottentor at the door, Ring on foot. Bar and café are solid, no fireworks.
Location: 1st district (Innere Stadt). The first district - UNESCO World Heritage, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Hofburg, Albertina. Stay here for postcard Vienna.
Location & getting there
The Hotel de France stands right on the Ringstraße in the first district, opposite the University of Vienna and the Votivkirche. The U2 station Schottentor is immediately outside, and several tram lines stop along the Ring - the Rathaus, Burgtheater and museum quarter are all a short ride away without changing. On foot, the walk to Graben and Stephansdom takes you past some of the finest Ringstraße architecture in the city. From the airport, take the CAT or S7 to Wien Mitte and continue by subway. There is also an underground garage for a fee.
Who is it for?
With rates from around 320 euros, the house sits well below Vienna's grand luxury names, making it a sensible entry point into the five-star category. It suits business travellers, conference guests and city-trippers who value a calm, classic atmosphere without theatrics - the university across the road gives the clientele a distinctly academic flavour. If you want a hotel with wow factor, a rooftop bar or bold design, you will not find it here: the de France is deliberately understated, solid and unexcitable.
