Hotel Sacher Wien
Vienna's most famous hotel right behind the State Opera - home of the original Sacher-Torte since 1832.
About the hotel
The Gürtler family has run the house for generations, and most concierges have been here for decades. Inside: red velvet, original paintings, the hotel's own art collection. You don't pay for the room, you pay for the address behind the Opera and for breakfast you can take in your suite. Typical guests: regulars, opera-goers, honeymooners.
Location: 1st district (Innere Stadt). The first district - UNESCO World Heritage, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Hofburg, Albertina. Stay here for postcard Vienna.
Location & getting there
It is hard to stay more centrally in Vienna: the Sacher sits directly behind the State Opera, right where Kärntner Straße heads off towards the cathedral. Albertina, Hofburg and the Graben are all an easy walk away, and the Ringstraße is practically on the doorstep. The Karlsplatz/Oper station with the U1, U2 and U4 lines is two minutes on foot, putting the whole city within quick reach. From the airport, take the CAT or S7 to Wien Mitte and change to the U4 towards Karlsplatz. Drivers can use the valet parking for a fee, with a garage nearby.
Who is it for?
The Sacher is the classic pick for couples, opera-goers and anyone marking a special occasion with a taste of old Vienna - honeymoons, milestone birthdays, anniversaries. With rooms from around 590 euros it plays in the very top league of the Vienna market, but in return you get an address most people only know from films. If you are after a modern design hotel or watching your budget, you will be happier elsewhere - solid four-star houses along the Ringstraße cost a fraction of the price.
