About this sight

The Musikverein building on Karlsplatz opened in 1870. Architect Theophil Hansen designed it in Greek Revival style. The main hall, the „Golden Hall", is regarded as one of the world's acoustically finest concert spaces, thanks to its shoebox shape, wooden construction and rich ornamentation. It is the home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which performs the globally televised New Year's Concert here every 1 January. A 2004 extension added four smaller halls: Glass, Metal, Stone and Wood.
