Who needs an eSIM for a trip to Austria, and who does not

An eSIM is a digital SIM card: the eSIM profile is downloaded to your phone instead of arriving as a plastic chip, and it sits next to your physical SIM card. Speeds are 3G to 5G depending on the local network; Saily does not name its Austrian network partner on the page.

Airalo is the largest eSIM marketplace and prices its Austria eSIM in euros. As of September 2026 the packages are 1 GB / 3 days for 4.00 €, 3 GB / 7 days for 5.50 €, 5 GB / 7 days for 6.50 €, 10 GB / 7 days for 9.00 €, 5 GB / 30 days for 7.50 €, 10 GB / 30 days for 10.00 €, 20 GB / 30 days for 14.50 € and 50 GB / 30 days for 26.00 €. There is no unlimited option for Austria, and the Austria page names neither a network partner nor a hotspot rule, so check the details screen in the app before you buy if either matters to you. Holafly takes the opposite approach: no data packages, only unlimited data for a chosen number of days. As of September 2026 the Austria eSIM costs US$11.90 for 3 days, US$20.50 for 5 days, US$27.50 for 7 days, US$36.50 for 10 days, US$50.50 for 15 days and US$73.90 for 30 days. Holafly names 3 Austria (Drei) as the network for its Austria eSIM, states that the eSIM does not include a local phone number for calls or SMS, and allows 1 GB of hotspot sharing per day. Vienna is a classic first or last stop on a Central Europe itinerary. Budapest is under three hours away by Railjet, Prague about four, Bratislava one. An Austria eSIM stops working at the border, so if your trip to Austria includes even one neighbouring country, a regional Europe plan is the better buy. Where to buy an eSIM for Austria and when to activate it

You get an eSIM for Austria online, either on the provider's website or in its app, and pay by card, PayPal or Apple Pay; there is no physical eSIM card to collect. No passport or ID is required for an international eSIM, unlike a local prepaid SIM card in Austria. Buying an eSIM a few days before you travel to Austria is the sweet spot: early enough to install it over Wi-Fi at home, late enough that prices and plans are current. The plan itself does not start until you activate the eSIM in Austria (Saily and Holafly) or until the validity you chose begins to count down after first use, so buying early does not waste days.

How to install and activate your eSIM for Austria

1. Check that your phone is eSIM compatible and that the phone is unlocked. iPhones from the XS and XR onwards, Google Pixel from the Pixel 3 and recent Samsung Galaxy models support eSIM. A carrier-locked phone will not accept a second profile.
2. Buy the plan and install your eSIM at home over Wi-Fi. Scan the QR code the provider sends, or use the in-app installation. Downloading the new eSIM profile needs an internet connection, so do not leave this until the arrivals hall. Keep the QR code email in case you have to reinstall.

Leave your primary SIM on for calls and SMS, but turn off its mobile data to avoid roaming charges from your home carrier.

Networks and coverage in Austria

Austria has three mobile network operators, listed by the telecom regulator RTR: A1 Telekom Austria, Magenta Telekom (still listed there under its former name T-Mobile Austria) and Drei. All three cover Vienna with 4G and 5G, and coverage throughout Austria is good along the main valleys and railway lines. Alternatives: local prepaid SIM card, home roaming, Wi-Fi

Local prepaid SIM card: A1 sells its B.free prepaid packages in A1 shops and online; the smallest, B.free S, costs 9.90 € for four weeks with 50 GB in Austria, of which 15 GB can be used in the EU (as of September 2026), and Magenta and Drei have comparable prepaid offers. The catch for tourists: since 1 January 2019 every prepaid SIM card in Austria must be registered by name under the Austrian telecommunications act, which means showing an official photo ID in a shop or completing an online identity check. For a stay of a few days that is more effort than a travel eSIM, and you have to swap out your physical SIM card. Local SIMs win only for stays of several weeks or if you need an Austrian number.

Your home carrier's roaming package: worth a look if you travel for a day or two and your carrier offers a flat daily travel data plan with sensible data limits. Compare it with the price per day of the eSIMs above; for a week in Vienna the eSIM is almost always cheaper.

Wi-Fi only: hotels, coffee houses and Wien Hauptbahnhof offer free Wi-Fi, and the Railjet has it on board. It works for a low-key visit, but navigation on the way and tickets on the platform are exactly the moments when you have no Wi-Fi.
