Stucco, parquet floors, Viennese history you can sleep in.
Historic houses in Vienna
In few cities can you sleep inside history as naturally as in Vienna: Gründerzeit facades, stucco ceilings, creaking herringbone parquet and ceiling heights new buildings can only dream of. Historic houses are not museums, though - they combine period substance with modern comfort, and exactly that mix is their appeal. If you are looking for something special in Vienna, you are more likely to find it here than in a standardized new-build hotel.
The range shows in the listed houses: Hotel Am Parkring occupies the upper floors of a building on the Ringstraße overlooking Stadtpark - panorama breakfast included. Villa Kumpf is a genuine turn-of-the-century villa on the edge of Grinzing, where vineyards and wine taverns replace the cityscape. And Hotel Apartment Rothensteiner in Mariahilf brings period charm close to Mariahilfer Straße. Historic stays in Vienna work on the Ring just as well as in a wine village.
Prices are more moderate than you might expect: in our listings the Rothensteiner starts at around 95 euros per night, Villa Kumpf at 145 euros and Hotel Am Parkring on the Ringstraße at 165 euros. History in Vienna does not automatically come with a luxury surcharge.
When booking, factor in the quirks of period buildings: rooms in the same house can differ considerably in size and layout, and not every historic building has a lift to all floors - with heavy luggage it is worth asking. Air conditioning is not a given in old buildings either, which can matter in midsummer. In return you get thick walls, tall rooms and an atmosphere no new build can replicate.

Frequently asked
Where do you find historic hotels in Vienna?
The classic grand buildings line the Ringstraße and the 1st district - Hotel Am Parkring is an example. Just as appealing are the Gründerzeit quarters inside the Gürtel and Grinzing in the 19th district, where Villa Kumpf offers turn-of-the-century atmosphere.
How much does a historic hotel in Vienna cost roughly?
Less than many expect: in our listings it starts at around 95 euros per night at Hotel Apartment Rothensteiner, while the Ringstraße location of Hotel Am Parkring starts at 165 euros. Period charm in Vienna is not purely a luxury affair.
Are historic hotels in Vienna modernly equipped?
Usually yes - most houses have been renovated several times and offer modern comfort behind historic facades. There can be limitations with lifts and air conditioning; if you depend on either, ask before booking.
Is a hotel in Grinzing worth it instead of the city center?
If you would rather spend your evenings at a wine tavern than on Karlsplatz, yes. Grinzing offers vineyards, the Vienna Woods and village atmosphere - but the center takes around 30 minutes by bus and subway. For pure sightseeing trips, the city center is more practical.
What should I look out for at a period-building hotel?
Check whether there is a lift and what the room layout looks like - period rooms in the same house often differ considerably. In midsummer it is worth asking about air conditioning or at least a shaded room.
