Mariahilf is the district of Mariahilfer Straße - Vienna's longest and busiest shopping street, running from the MuseumsQuartier to Westbahnhof station. But the sixth district is more than shopping: the side streets towards Gumpendorfer Straße are lined with cafés and small restaurants, the Haus des Meeres aquarium in a former flak tower is a family favorite, and the Raimund Theater draws musical audiences.
No district in this selection has more hotels - and hardly any offers a wider range. At the top end plays Hotel Motto with its brasserie and rooftop bar, joined by boutique houses like Hotel Das Tyrol or Pakat Suites with kitchenettes for longer stays. The middle is covered by solid places such as the Senator Hotel and Tourotel Mariahilf, while the budget bracket includes Pension Mozart, the A&O Wien Stadthalle hostel and Hotel Terminus directly opposite Westbahnhof - perfect if you arrive by train.
The U3 runs practically underneath Mariahilfer Straße with several stops in the district, the U6 joins at Westbahnhof, and the U4 along the Wienzeile heads towards Schönbrunn - for a palace visit you are ideally placed. On foot you reach the MuseumsQuartier and the Naschmarkt in a few minutes, the old town in about twenty.
One fine-tuning tip: the most interesting corner of the district is the area around Gumpendorfer Straße, where coffee houses, bars and small shops mix - staying here feels lively but a notch more relaxed than on the big shopping axis. For food, the rule holds anyway: one lane off Mariahilfer Straße you almost always eat better and cheaper. And remember that shops in Vienna close on Sundays - if you only come for the weekend, use Saturday for shopping and Sunday for museums or Schönbrunn.
Mariahilf is the right choice for shoppers, train travelers and anyone who values a large hotel selection at every price point - hardly anywhere in Vienna lets you trade location against budget so flexibly. To be honest, though: Mariahilfer Straße itself is crowded by day, and the area around Westbahnhof is more functional than pretty. If you are after romantic old-town atmosphere or complete quiet, book a room in a side street - or pick a different district altogether.
