Leopoldstadt sits like an island between the Danube Canal and the Danube - and it feels that way too: its own rhythm, plenty of green, plenty of everyday life. On one side the Prater with the Giant Ferris Wheel and the kilometers-long Hauptallee, on the other the Baroque Augarten and the Karmeliter quarter with its market, small restaurants and Jewish history. The second district is not classic sightseeing territory but a place where Vienna actually lives - which is exactly what makes it appealing to many visitors.

Hotels here are noticeably cheaper than across the canal. Hotel Stephanie is a classic four-star near the Danube Canal with a well-regarded breakfast, Magdas Hotel is a much-discussed house with a social mission, and small addresses like the Persian-inspired Hotel Cyrus near Praterstern, Hotel Wilhelmshof or Hotel Zisper offer character instead of chain uniformity. For runners and cyclists the location is ideal: the Prater Hauptallee and the Danube Island are practically on your doorstep.

Connections are better than the district's reputation suggests: U1, U2 and several S-Bahn lines meet at Praterstern, and the U1 gets you to Stephansplatz or the Danube Island in a few minutes. From the Karmeliter quarter you can walk across the Danube Canal into the old town in about fifteen minutes - one of the city's most underrated walks.

Timing matters here: in summer Leopoldstadt plays all its strengths - swimming at the Danube Island, cycling the Prater Hauptallee, long evenings in the beer gardens. Most rides in the Wurstelprater run from roughly March to October, while the Ferris wheel turns all year. The Karmelitermarkt is at its liveliest on Saturdays. In winter the district goes noticeably quiet - come then mainly for the price advantage, and enjoy having the Prater and Augarten almost to yourself on a walk.

The second district suits you if you want fair prices, markets, parks and a genuine residential neighborhood, and don't mind ten minutes on the U-Bahn to the center. Families love the Prater and Augarten, sporty travelers the Danube Island. It is less suitable if you want imperial grandeur right outside your door - and the area around Praterstern gets a bit rough and busy at night, so light sleepers should pick a side street in the Karmeliter quarter.
