The Imperial is in this selection because it is the only house in the city where state visits are not marketing but daily operations. Since 1873 in the former palace of the Duke of Württemberg, with its original marble staircase and the Musikverein as its immediate neighbor - no hotel bed gets you closer to imperial Vienna. If you see history as an amenity, this is the densest offering in town.

Location & getting there
Hotel Imperial stands on the Kärntner Ring, right next to the Musikverein - the hall where the New Year's Concert is performed each year. The Ringstraße with the State Opera, Karlsplatz and Stadtpark is on the doorstep, and St. Stephen's Cathedral is a relaxed stroll away along Kärntner Straße. With U1, U2 and U4 at Karlsplatz and Oper within walking distance, connections are excellent. From the airport, take the CAT to Wien Mitte and continue on the U4 to Karlsplatz, or simply hail a taxi - either would be fitting.

How the price compares
What you pay for here is the historic substance and the standing of the address: the marble staircase, palace rooms from 1873 and the Musikverein next door. What you do not get are bathrooms built to today's new-build measure or a large spa, and the formal house asks a certain willingness to play along.
