During summer months (usually July to September) the student dormitory opens to travellers. Rooms are simple, more student-dorm than hotel - but affordable and in the fourth district. Worth it when regular hotels are sold out or too expensive in high season.

Location & getting there

Sommerhotel Wieden is in the fourth district, a small, lively quarter between Karlskirche, the Vienna University of Technology and the Freihausviertel. The Naschmarkt with its stalls and eateries is an easy walk away, as is the Karlskirche - and by subway or tram you reach the historic centre in about ten minutes. Wieden has a student feel, with cafés and vintage shops rather than tourist bustle, yet still feels very central. From the airport, the classic route is via Wien Mitte: take the CAT or S7 there, then continue by public transport into the fourth district.

Who is it for?

The Sommerhotel is a special case in the Vienna market: it only opens during the summer months, usually July to September, when the student residence stands empty. That is exactly when it shines - from around 79 euros a night you get a bed in the fourth district at the height of the season, while regular hotels are sold out or far pricier. Ideal for budget travellers, young visitors and spontaneous summer trips. The rooms feel like student housing, not hotel comfort: if you want atmosphere, service, or are travelling outside the summer, you will need to book elsewhere anyway.
