The Am Parkring is this selection's proof that the first district does not have to be expensive: a four-star house on the upper floors of a commercial building right at the Stadtpark, with breakfast on the eleventh floor above the rooftops. The rooms are functional rather than glamorous, but the location and view play in a league that normally costs far more.

The hotel occupies the upper floors of a commercial building on Parkring, the lift goes straight up to the lobby on the eleventh floor. Upside: every view is a view - either Stadtpark or over the rooftops towards Stephansdom. Rooms are functional, the panoramic breakfast is the real selling point.

The Am Parkring is one of the more affordable ways to sleep in the first district - solid four-star mid-range by Vienna standards, with a prime location on top. It suits first-time visitors who want to explore everything on foot, couples, and anyone who will appreciate the panoramic breakfast on the eleventh floor. If you are after design, a trendy neighborhood or particularly spacious rooms, look towards Neubau or the apartment houses instead - what you get here is classic, functional hotel-keeping.

The Hotel Am Parkring occupies the upper floors of a commercial building on the Ringstraße, directly opposite the Stadtpark. The U4 station Stadtpark is two minutes away, and the center around Stephansdom and Kärntner Straße is an easy walk. Arriving from the airport is particularly convenient here: the CAT and S7 terminate at Wien Mitte, from where it is a short hop on the U4 or a stroll along the park. The Konzerthaus is also close by - handy for concert evenings. A garage in the immediate vicinity takes the car for a fee.

How the price compares
The Am Parkring is the rare case where you barely pay a premium for the Ring location - in return the rooms are functional and there is no restaurant or spa at all. The money goes into the address, the view and the breakfast floor, not the furnishings. If you eat out in town in the evening anyway, you lose nothing by that.
