Location: 6th district (Mariahilf). Mariahilfer Straße - Vienna's longest shopping mile. Mix of hotels, restaurants, theatres.

Location & getting there

The Rothensteiner is in Mariahilf, the 6th district - a neighbourhood that blends shopping street, theatres and everyday Viennese life without ever tipping into pure tourism. Mariahilfer Straße with its shops is within walking distance, as are the U3 and U4 lines, which take you to the centre or out to Schönbrunn in a few stops. The Naschmarkt and the MuseumsQuartier are a pleasant walk away. From the airport, take the CAT or S7 to Wien Mitte and change to the metro - a fuss-free arrival with no taxi needed.

Who is it for?

If you want to experience Vienna in a period building without paying boutique prices, this is your place: high ceilings, stucco and parquet in a townhouse renovated in 2007, plus owner-run, personal service and breakfast included in most rates. From about 95 euros, that's a very fair entry point on the Vienna market, and the apartments with kitchenette also work for longer stays. The house is less suited to guests expecting polished designer interiors, lifestyle bars or full four-star infrastructure - the Rothensteiner is deliberately classic, and that's exactly its charm.
