Social-enterprise project run by Caritas: the team is largely made up of people with refugee backgrounds, multiple languages, an international feel. Inside: lots of upcycled design, creative furniture, honest breakfast. Located near Augarten, centre in ten minutes by tram or U2. If you care about what stands behind a hotel, this fits.

Location: 2nd district (Leopoldstadt). Between the Danube and Danube Canal. Prater, Karmelitermarkt, Augarten - Vienna's most colourful district.

Location & getting there

Magdas Hotel is in Leopoldstadt by the Augarten, whose baroque gardens with their striking flak towers begin just around the corner. The second district is Vienna's green, multicultural side: the Prater and its Ferris wheel, the Karmelitermarkt with its restaurants and the Danube Canal are all within easy reach. The historic centre is about ten minutes away by tram or U2. The neighbourhood itself is a relaxed residential area with a young crowd, not classic tourist terrain. From the airport, take the CAT or S7 to Wien Mitte and continue by public transport into the second district.

Who is it for?

Magdas is for travellers who care about what stands behind a hotel: the Caritas project largely employs people with refugee backgrounds, and you feel it in the multilingual, warm-hearted atmosphere. If you appreciate upcycled design, an honest breakfast and a story with conviction, this is your place - as a couple or a family too. From around 99 euros a night it is also fairly priced, clearly below comparable boutique houses. If instead you expect polished four-star comfort, concierge service or a location in the middle of the first district, a classic city hotel will make you happier.
